2025 CONTENDER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
OPENING CEREMONY KICKS OFF THIS EVENING 170 SAILORS FROM 12 NATIONS
Malcesine, July 29, 2025 – Following the recent success of the 2025 Moth World Championship, which concluded just a few weeks ago, Malcesine is now preparing to host another major sailing event: the 2025 Contender World Championship.
The official races will begin tomorrow, Wednesday, July 30, in the waters of Lake Garda, with operations based at Fraglia Vela Malcesine, the organizing club. The championship program, which runs through Sunday, August 3, was preceded by the Pre-Worlds (July 25–27) and the measurement operations that began on July 28, during which teams completed technical checks and took part in the practice race.
Malcesine has become a regular stop for the Contender class, but this marks the first time it is hosting the World Championship, a significant milestone for international sailing in Italy. This success is also thanks to the collaboration with the Municipality of Malcesine and the synergy with local tourism organizations, which help make the Veneto town a key hub for global sailing—from classic boats to modern foiling.
The 2025 edition will feature 170 sailors from 12 countries, including Australia, the most distant nation represented.
This afternoon’s practice race saw broad participation.
This evening, at 6:30 PM, the opening ceremony will take place: local youth athletes will parade through the streets of Malcesine alongside the championship participants, carrying the 12 national flags in a striking procession that will culminate at the historic Palazzo dei Capitani, overlooking the lake, where the official opening event will be held.
